Geometric Accent Wall - Design & Installation

A new client reached out to me via instagram and asked if I could design and install an accent wall in his new house. They had a few precedent images as inspiration, but wanted something truly custom that would also match their house style and artistic personalities.

STEP 1. DESIGN

The first step was to take measurements and start sketching out a few designs. It’s easy to fall in love with the first design you create, but further iterations can both help refine the design and provide options to the client. For this project, I created 4 separate drafts based on a grid that would fit the space.

STEP 2. CREATING BASE GRID

With the design, colors, and materials selected, the next step was to enter the space and lay out the grid. Using a carpenter’s chalk box and finishing nails, I carefully measured out the preset base.

STEP 3. LAYING THE TRIM

Precision is everything early on. Taking the time to do everything as specifically as possible is what makes the final design come together. With highly intentional design, any incorrect measurements will most likely result in noticeable flaws to the final installation. Utilizing the same care taken to lay the grid, the trim is applied based on the concept design.

STEP 4. FINAL COATING

The client chose the final colors and I couldn’t be happier with their selection. The background wall and the accent trim are painted the same color with the trim having a semigloss finish while the wall remains flat. This helped to elevate the trim visually even further off the wall.

Each stage of this process created its own beautiful experience and imagery. The infinite possibility of designs and finishes make this style of geometric accent wall a great fit for mid-century to contemporary and modern homes. I’m looking forward to choosing a section of my own house to add a similar feature.
