1960 Schwinn Bicycle Artwork

I’ve made artwork on a range of different canvases and surfaces, but this one was definitely a first for me. I found this 1960 Schwinn bike frame and fenders laying next to a dumpster in Brooklyn, NY and knew I had to take it home. After cleaning it up and a fresh base coat, I thought adding a fine pattern that from a distance looks like texturing was the way to go.

For visual consistency in the pattern, I used a 1/4 inch grid to layout the design. It was a slow process to create this attention to spacing and detail, but the end result was well worth it.

The 1960 Schwinn frame and fenders now hang in our billiard room above the piano. Not gonna lie, it’s a bit wacky, but a great conversation piece. Bike art has a unique following and hanging on the wall it certainly sparks more conversation than a standard canvas or framed work.
