Two Toned Geometric Pattern

I was asked recently, “How do you come up with your patterns?” And, “Where does your design inspiration come from?” The truth of it is, most of the ideas evolve in real time as they are being made. I don’t often have direct concept in mind when creating an abstract pattern such as the ones here.

I started this one on a gridded note pad. I didn’t intend for it to be anything more than a doodle. The pen touched the paper in the center of the page and the pattern began to unfold. Often, I work from the center out, but that too depends on the day.

Once I got the pattern to a place where I was pleased with it, I scanned it in at high resolution and began to edit the design. The black and white is the original edit. I also inverted background to black and added a gold foil for additional color ways. The end result is a tiled pattern ideal for textile use or wall art. Admittedly, textile is where I love to see these designs come to life.
